Over 40 NSHC patients and their families have tested their green thumbs in the Moraine Township Community Garden, receiving a plot which they planted and tended to during the summer months. The township originally started the garden to provide fresh produce for the township food pantry. In 2011, NSHC was invited to partner in this community project! Moraine Township, Friends for Health, and several other organizations helped cover the cost of all the plants and supplies provided. Families that participated donated some of their harvest to the Moraine Township Food Pantry. The garden has offered a great opportunity for families to become physically active while accessing healthy foods!
The Health and Wellness Program conducts community outreach with the goal of educating current and future patients, as well as the community-at-large, on available services and programs at NSHC, as well as other health care resources, approaches to managing their own health and opportunities to improve their fitness and overall well-being. Each year the program hosts several information tables at events throughout the community, including Highland Park’s Sidewalk Sale, Trustmark’s Wellness Fair and Highwood’s Pumpkin Fest with exposure to hundreds of people who perhaps were not aware of the services and programs available at NSHC!
Health and Wellness
In its pursuit to address the incidence of obesity and other chronic conditions in children and adults, the Health and Wellness Program utilizes physical fitness promotion. Since 2009, over 200 families and individuals have received fitness memberships to the Recreation Center of Highland Park (Rec Center), or have participated in one or all of the four 8-week group exercise classes offered since the Winter 2011. Time and time again, patients return to inform us of their success at losing weight, exercising regularly and feeling good!
Now in its second year, a total of six sessions of We Can!~CATCH, have been offered. Over 60 families have partaken in this lifestyle changing program! As part of the program, participants take away valuable tools to make healthier choices at home. According to post survey feedback, a majority of the participants made healthy lifestyle changes. ―I loved coming to class and trying new healthy foods‖ and ―They motivate me to continue learning different ways to keep my family healthy‖ were amongst several positive comments received from participants.
